What Is Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis: A Global Health Concern

What is Tuberculosis?

Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious bacterial infection that primarily affects the lungs, but can also spread to other parts of the body. It is caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which is spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

Symptoms of TB

The common symptoms of TB include:

  • Persistent cough
  • Chest pain
  • Coughing up blood
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Weight loss
  • Fever
  • Night sweats

Global Burden of TB

TB is a major global health concern, with an estimated 10.6 million people falling ill in 2022, and 1.6 million deaths. It is the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent, ranking above HIV/AIDS. Over 95% of TB cases and deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.

Causes of TB

TB is caused by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacterium. The bacteria can become active and cause disease in people who have been exposed to the bacteria, but whose immune systems are unable to control the infection. Factors that increase the risk of developing TB include:

  • Weakened immune system (e.g., from HIV infection)
  • Close contact with someone who has active TB
  • Living in a crowded or poorly ventilated environment
  • Underlying medical conditions (e.g., diabetes, chronic kidney disease)

Treatment of TB

TB is a curable disease if treated promptly and properly. Treatment typically involves a combination of antibiotics taken over a period of 6 to 9 months. It is important to complete the full course of treatment to prevent the development of drug-resistant TB. Drug-resistant TB is more difficult to treat and can be fatal.

Prevention of TB

There are several measures that can be taken to prevent TB, including:

  • Vaccinating with the BCG vaccine
  • Early diagnosis and treatment of TB cases
  • Infection control measures (e.g., covering coughs and sneezes, proper ventilation)
  • Screening high-risk populations (e.g., healthcare workers, people living with HIV)

Conclusion

Tuberculosis is a serious but curable disease. By understanding its causes, symptoms, and prevention measures, we can work together to reduce the global burden of TB and save lives.
